El baile - La Sardana
Students in grades 1 & 2 have begun their exploration of the world of Artes Dramáticas. They listened to music that accompanies la Sardana, a traditional Spanish dance native to the region of Catalonia. They responded to the music by planning their own baile (dance), focusing on using choreographic devices such as body shapes and travelling movements. They then performed their dance in front of their peers.
Students watched a video of la Sardana and made great observations about el baile, la gente (people) y the city of Barcelona:
'They are holding hands up in a circle and moving on their tippy toes' Tasmin (2 Leah).
'All kinds of people are dancing' Ella (2 Mark)
'There are lots of old buildings around, much older than Melbourne!' Lachie (1 Sophie).
Here you can watch a video of a typical dance in the streets of Barcelona:
And here are our students performing the dance!
