Year 5&6 students were introduced to the world of Flamenco a traditional Spanish dance from Andalucia. We discussed how the flamenco is not just baile (dance) but a combination of 3 things:
El baile
El cante
La música de la guitarra
We watched Carmen Amaya – the queen of Flamenco – dancing. She was the first woman to dance the Flamenco wearing trousers and used very fast and elaborate footwork. This helped us move away from stereotypes around attire (colourful dresses) and gender (fast footwork is falsely perceived to be for the male dancers).
