Alhambra tiles
Students in grade 5 have been learning about the arabic art of Alhambra, a palace and fortress in the city of Granada, South Spain. It was originally constructed as a small fortress in 889 aC and it was renovated and converted into a royal palace in the mid-13th century. The palace is an excellent example of Islamic Art, boasting stunning decorations on the walls consisting of tile mosaics and Arabic inscriptions.
Students looked at different designs for the tiles and created their own on graph paper, following the principles of radial symmetry. They then carved them onto lino and printed onto paper (see these beatiful examples below).
